What racing paddlers actually need
Racing introduces a stricter set of requirements. Dedicated race boards are typically 12.6 to 14 feet long, very narrow (24 to 27 inches), and built from carbon fiber or similar lightweight materials.

Winter paddling is safe when three conditions are met: you're dressed for immersion rather than for the air, you're not paddling alone, and you've picked water that's protected and ice-free. Miss any of the three and the risk profile changes fast.
The rewards are real. Waterways empty out completely. Wildlife activity picks up. Cold air is dense and still, so mornings are often glassy in a way they never are in summer. Here's the part that surprises people: cold shock peaks between 50 and 60°F and doesn't get worse below that. Once your breathing control is completely gone, it can't be lost to a greater degree. What changes in colder water is pain and panic, not the shock response.
You may run into the Rule of 120, which says you need thermal protection when air plus water temperature add up to less than 120°F. Treat it as a rough prompt, not a rule. A warm afternoon can easily mask water that will incapacitate you, and the air number does nothing for you once you're in.

What Cold Water Actually Does to You
Three things happen, in order, and they happen faster than most paddlers expect.
Cold shock hits in the first 30 to 90 seconds. Involuntary gasping, rapid breathing you can't control, and a sharp rise in heart rate. The danger here is inhaling water during the gasp, not the cold itself.
Cold incapacitation comes next. Cooling muscle and nerve tissue steadily strips away your ability to use your hands and arms. It isn't a cliff you fall off at a fixed minute. It starts the moment you go in and runs faster the colder the water is.
Hypothermia sets in when your core temperature drops below 95°F, and it takes well over an hour for most adults.
That order matters, because it inverts what most people assume. Hypothermia isn't what stops paddlers from self-rescuing. Losing grip strength is a problem. Your remount is something you attempt as soon as your breathing settles, not something you work up to.
What to Wear for Winter Paddle Boarding
Dress for the water, not the air. If you take one thing from this guide, take that.
A drysuit is the safest option below 50°F. Waterproof gaskets seal water out entirely, and you layer underneath for insulation. A thick wetsuit works for milder winter days and high-output paddling, where you're generating heat and expect to stay mostly upright.
Whichever you choose, the accessories aren't optional. Neoprene boots, gloves, and a hood matter more than most paddlers expect, because your hands, feet and head lose heat fastest. Cold hands cost you the ability to remount before you feel cold anywhere else.

Underneath, use synthetic or merino wool base layers. Cotton traps moisture and accelerates heat loss, which is exactly backwards from what you need.

How Cold Weather Affects Your Board Pressure
This is the part almost nobody warns you about, and it causes more unnecessary panic than anything else in winter paddling.
Your board will read low in the cold, and that's normal. Air contracts as temperature drops. A board inflated to 15 PSI on a warm afternoon can read noticeably lower on a cold morning without anything being wrong with it. A drop of one to two PSI overnight in cool conditions is expected behavior, not a leak.
Every winter, paddlers pull out a board that reads soft, assume it's punctured, and go looking for a hole that doesn't exist. Before you start soaping seams, let the board reach the ambient temperature and check again.

What to do about it:
Inflate indoors when you can, then top off outside once the board has cooled and settled. You'll get a truer reading.

Where to Paddle in Winter, and When to Cancel
Pick protected water. Calm lakes, sheltered bays, and coves with short distances to shore. Avoid rivers with current, avoid open crossings, and stay close enough to land that you can reach it quickly if something goes wrong.
Watch for ice. Not just sheet ice on the surface, but shelf ice along the shoreline that makes exits impossible. A launch point you can't climb back onto is not a launch point.
Cancel the session if:
- Water is below 60°F and you don't have proper immersion gear
- You'd be paddling alone
- Ice is forming anywhere on your route, or shoreline access is blocked
- Wind or chop has built beyond what you'd want to handle while cold and tired
- Daylight is tighter than your planned session plus a margin

If You Fall In
Four steps, in this order.
One: Don't thrash. Keep your airway clear of the water and hold onto your board. The initial gasping passes, though you'll have less control over it than you expect.
Two: Remount as soon as your breathing settles. Position yourself at the center handle, kick your legs up, pull with both arms, and roll on. Your leash is doing more work here than anywhere else in paddling, because your board is your flotation and your platform out of the water.
Three: Stay low, minimize wind exposure, and head for shore. Don't remove wet clothing in the water. It still insulates.
Four: Warm up on land. Dry layers, core first. If hypothermia symptoms are present, get medical attention.
Practice your remount in warm water before you need it in the cold. Reading about it and doing it are different things.
How to Store Your Paddle Board for Winter
Clean and dry it thoroughly. Salt, grit and moisture all sit in the places you can't see: around seams, valves, and under the deck pad. Get them out before the board goes away for months.
Store indoors, temperature controlled. Extreme cold and direct sun both stress PVC. Outdoor storage exposes your board to UV, freezing, and constant pressure swings, none of which do it any favors.
Deflated or inflated both work. If you're rolling it, roll loosely and avoid tight creases. If you're storing it inflated, drop the PSI slightly and lay it flat or rack it to take stress off the seams.

Freshwater rods and reels work fine for freshwater use indefinitely with basic maintenance. Saltwater use requires either dedicated saltwater gear or thorough post-trip cleaning of freshwater gear. Salt spray reaches inside reels and corrodes internal components over time.
Lures and baits:
Freshwater lures (soft plastics, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, topwater) work fine in saltwater too, but saltwater has its own specialty lures optimized for coastal species. Live bait fishing differs significantly: freshwater uses worms and minnows, saltwater uses shrimp, crabs, and cut baitfish.

PFD and safety gear:
Same requirements across both environments. Coast Guard-approved PFD, leash, whistle, and communication plan. Saltwater conditions may warrant a slightly more robust PFD because wind and wave conditions tend to be more challenging than typical freshwater conditions.

Finding a New Way to Connect with the Ocean
Bree first discovered paddle boarding after joining a local women’s paddle group — and it didn’t take long for her to fall in love.
“Although I love boating, there is something special about no motors, no big vessel — just me and my board,” she shares. “I feel very connected to the ocean when paddle boarding.”
For her, paddle boarding is more than just an activity. It’s a way to slow down, experience the environment up close, and discover parts of the Keys that can’t always be reached by boat.
The Perfect Florida Keys Day
If you’re looking for inspiration for your own Keys adventure, Bree's perfect day starts early.
A sunrise run across the Old Seven Mile Bridge kicks off the morning, followed by a day spent exploring the backcountry by boat and paddle board. One of her favorite parts of having an inflatable paddle board is how easy it is to bring along for a full day of exploring.
“I love being able to bring my paddle board on the boat and explore the mangroves and islands in the backcountry,” she says.
After a day on the water, she recommends ending with dinner and drinks in Key West.
How Often Bree is On the Water
Living in the Keys means there’s always another place to explore. On a good week, Bree spends more days on the water than not — around four days per week.
“Paddle boarding helps my love for the ocean continue to grow,” she says. “It’s so easy to get out on the water and get an up-close look at the beautiful habitats and ecosystems here in the Keys.”

She also recommends checking weather radar before heading out, especially during storm season.
“Some days the wind is ripping at 20 knots, and that’s when we want to be safe and not go out.”

The Keys are beautiful year-round, but summer is one of her favorite times for clear water.
“Although it’s also sargassum season, the sargassum is not everywhere,” she explains. “Sometimes you just have to get out past it.”

One of the most unforgettable moments of her paddle boarding adventures was an encounter with a great hammerhead shark.
“It was about the same length as my board and cruised right by me — so close that I could have touched it — and went on its way.”

“The salt gets on everything, so rinsing off your gear is super important for keeping things nice.”

Her Biggest Summer Paddle Boarding Advice
Her advice for making the most out of your summer on the water?
“Explore! Try new spots and go with the flow. You never know what you’ll see when paddle boarding, and here in the Keys, you’ll see something different every time.”
Her final must-have? A good pair of polarized sunglasses.
“They’ll really help you see everything beneath the surface.”
