ISUP SUGGESTIONS FOR BEGINNERS

The Stand Up Paddle Boarding is one of the newest and coolest sports that’s getting more and more popularity in the recent years. In Fact, today it has moved up to the number one new water sport in the USA. We shared with you in a previous article that even in the small country of Slovenia in Europe the so-called urban supping has become an interesting way to explore the Old Town in the capital of Ljubljana. This is just one of the countless things one could do with a SUP. As a beginner in this fascinating sport, you might be a little bit confused as to what to do, so we have some valuable tips for you:

1) Make sure to get far enough into the water!

This may sound like common sense but it is actually something that almost all beginners get wrong. So, you are getting excited to conquer the nearby sea, river or lake with your ISUP for the first time and you make two steps into the water and decide to get on your board. After a couple of seconds, you realize the fins of the board are touching the bottom or you try to paddle away from the river bank and you hit the rocks on the bottom with your paddle. And on top of that, you don’t seem to be moving an inch and may even be floating back due to the fact that the closer you are to the beach, the stronger the current on the water’s surface.

It takes a little time but you will definitely overcome and move forward having lots of fun in the sun. Also, the good news is our boards are 4 layers thick (more than any competition) and made from materials that stand up to rocks, sand and a few (forced) pushes from your paddle to try to move forward.

2) How to get on the board?

A mistake that oftentimes is made even from more experienced suppers is trying to get on the board on their feet first. The more safe and balanced way to get out of the water and climb on the board is on your knees first. This is an important point for beginners. Once you have secured a knelt-down position in the middle of the board, you can now stand up and avoid unnecessary pressure on your joints as well as get the right standing posture from the very start. The way you stand up on your board is crucial to your effective performance in the water and your balance while paddling. Make sure you are in the middle of your board so that parts of it don’t get dragged into the water.

3) The right way to paddle.

A very common frustration for beginners is paddling. Maybe you found it takes some work to paddle and even despite work you weren’t moving your ISUP more than an inch or two when you first got into stand up paddling. Now, the thing you are most likely to have done wrong is holding your paddle the wrong way. Firstly, you need to make sure you are holding the blade angle forward. And secondly, you need to hold the holder of the paddle with one hand and the middle of the paddle with the other hand. To turn to the right or to the left you paddle respectively to the left or to the right with the blade angle pointing towards you.
